Okay I'm not an expert on this race at all. Two days ago a friend of mine who lives in New Jersey shared his impressions. He thinks that Sherrill has the edge but that Baraka is closing the gap. Democrats like that Baraka has taken active stands against Trump, and they haven't seen such outward action by Sherrill (or Fulop).

At his presentation at the end of last week, Bricklayer said that one thing he wanted to do at FEMA was to initiate a strategic plan. This week he discovered that we already have one, so today he rescinded it.

Richardson is addressing FEMA staff right now. A lot of people in my region are murmuring against what he is saying, mostly because he is addressing staff as if they are 5th graders. He just said that just20% of us will go along with the changes he wants to make.

We thought something was up with Cam two days ago when his multiple photos on the FEMA intranet site started to disappear. Then he appeared at a congressional committee yesterday to say that further drawdown of employees needed to wait for the state emergency management agencies to prepare to step up on their own.
My section at FEMA has lost about a third of the employees in recent months, and if they offer another "fork", I think about half of those left would take it this time.

Would someone with better knowledge about the Canadian races give a quick overview of the races? It seems to me that thus far a chunk of the NDP voters are going with the Liberals to ensure the defeat of the Conservatives - but maybe that's just the few races that I have clicked on. Are any races surprises thus far? Any trends of note?

As I recall he would also sometimes look up the home phone numbers of politicians and call them on what we would consider to be their landlines.

Thank you for posting this, BigZuck08. We had a lot of discussions here at OC in 2022 during the Fetterman-Lamb primary race. I felt that Lamb was better on the issues and was the stronger candidate to win the general election, and I voted for Lamb in the primary. I didn't dislike Fetterman, and I didn't understand the negativity towards Lamb back then. Voting for Fetterman against Mehmet Oz was easy for me, particularly after Oz said in the general election debate that local politicians should help women and their doctors to decide on having an abortion.

Hey Lawrence - on this page, Bradford had been keyed to the wrong party. He was not the Free Soil candidate - he was the Native American nominee. Just so you can reconsider your endorsement.

I realize this is an old posting by Randy, but the first half of odd-numbered years are probably the best time to make structural changes like these.

Wow this is a lot. First, let's thank Randy for creating this site for us! We owe him a great debt of gratitude.
In terms of all these ideas, rather than a mountain of intertwined comments, would it be useful to categorize them and take them up one at a time?
For example, we might devote one week to discussing possible improvements to blogs. That will make everything more manageable for Randy, and as we go along things might materialize we hadn't thought of before.
An alternative might be to have small committees to collaborate and brainstorm on specific issues and report back.
We could also do something like the FAQs with separate links for the different avenues under consideration.
I have some ideas for miscellaneous improvements - I have thought about writing a series of blogs about them as a means of organizing my thoughts [which would make it easier for people to ignore me if they wish].
A group of us worked around 2006 or so to reach out to other websites, but we didn't really know what we were doing and nothing substantial came of it.

Maybe nobody cares but...
The situation among Texas Democrats in 1952 was complicated and revolved around what was called the tidelands oil issue. President Truman had issued an executive order nationalizing offshore oil located on the continental shelf beyond low tide. The governors of CA, TX, and LA objected to this, wanting their oil companies to drill in these areas. Congress passed legislation consistent with these governors, but Truman vetoed it. Texas claimed lands reaching 10.5 miles into the Gulf of Mexico, consistent with the three Spanish leagues Mexico agreed to when Texas became independent. Three relevant lawsuits went to the US Supreme Court, which ruled for Truman, but in the fall of 1952 Eisenhower came out in favor of the Texas claim.
In Texas, Gov. Shivers was having a spat with Lyndon Johnson. Shivers met with Stevenson on Aug 23 to make his case, but Stevenson couldn't see a way to overcome the Supreme Court's three rulings. Republicans, hoping for help from Shivers to win the state for Ike, nominated Shivers as the Republican candidate for Governor (he had already won the Democratic nomination).
When the state Democratic convention met on Sept. 10, 1952, the delegates faced a three-way division among the states rights Dems, the Loyal Dems, and the Shivers Dems. The states rights Democrats wanted to list Stevenson as the "National Democratic" nominee and Ike as the "Texas Democratic" nominee. LBJ and Sam Rayburn, leaders of the "Loyal Democrats" who supported Stevenson, wanted to list Stevenson as the Democratic nominee and force people to vote Republican if they liked Ike. The convention started a roll call on the states rights plan; it was losing by a 2:1 margin when its leaders withdrew the motion rather than lose in the convention. Then the convention passed a Shivers-supported resolution that allowed Democrats to campaign and vote for Ike if they saw fit (Austin American-Statesman, 9/10/1952). The Texas Democrats didn't endorse Ike but agreed not to punish party members who supported him.

This whole event was really troubling. Trump came up with a deal that is very bad for Ukraine, the victim nation here. Zelenskyy finally and reluctantly agreed to the deal, as long as Trump agreed to security guarantees. At the meeting, JD and Trump ambush Zelenskyy and insult him in front of the media.
I find it shameful that Trump has decided to abandon our nation's role as leader of the free world and instead try to take advantage of the nation under attack.
It's time for Europe to come up with a deal to help Ukraine and leave the US out of it. Trump is leading the US into the axis of evil with Russia and China.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes!
For those of you who remember them, Brandon's birthday is tomorrow, and Thomas Walker's birthday is early next month.
I have been active here on and off for two decades now, but I feel that I have more stuff that I want to contribute than I have time for!
So much information on our historic elections remains completely obscure, and I find it exciting to draw out the info so we can understand what took place to lead to where we are now. Of my last three articles, two were for candidates I would definitely *not* have supported, but now I can give an informed reason for how I would have voted.
Do any of you have an interest in organizing an OC meetup in Pennsylvania sometime? Maybe this summer?

Luzerne County Historian: I remember when Mondale died, it seemed almost like an "this also happened in the news today" moment. Like, it wasn't a big thing, there was no real fanfare. It was in the news for a day and then never talked about.
I mean, I know it was a long time ago but he was still Vice President and the 1984 Democratic presidential nominee.
I noticed a big difference between coverage for Nelson Rockefeller vs Hubert Humphrey too.
